Many touchpads with software packages add a tab to the Control Panel>Mouse which has a checkbox to disable the touchpad when a USB mouse is detected. I would see if you have that and select it to test it.

What tells you the touchpad itself is causing the hangs?

Go over the Windows 10 Install Integrity Checklist to make sure it's set up correctly, optimized for best performance, and any needed repairs are done.

I believe the windows update was not supplying a driver for the mouse or the one it was trying to supply was for windows 7, after installing the driver for windows 8 I was able to get the touchpad software to run,

the touch pad software by default dose not disable the mouse pad when an external mouse is plugged in

and what tells me the touch pad is hanging or just is no longer available is when it no longer responds to my fingers going across the pad or clicking the mouse buttons but the little icon in the task tray will say that my fingers are still on the touch pad, then I have to plug in the external mouse and open the touch pad GUI and try to disable/enable the touch pad manually until it starts responding again, sometimes the GUI will not respond or open, then I restart my computer and the dell touch pad icon dose not come up in the task tray witch tells me windows is not starting the software upon start up like it normally should and then I have to uninstall and reinstall the driver to get it running, now that I have installed the driver for windows 8 hopefully this will cease to happen

Windows 10 Driver Update
